How to grow and shape a beard that suits you.

What a professional beard trim actually does, how to pick a shape for your face, and how to keep it looking sharp between visits.

A client with a shaped beard in the chair at Khalil Barbershop

A beard trim is more than taking length off. A barber sets the cheek line, sets the neckline, balances the beard with your haircut, and shapes it so it flatters your jaw instead of hiding it. Most beards that look untidy are not too long. They have the wrong lines.

The two lines that matter

The neckline

This is where most home trims go wrong. The neckline should sit about two finger widths above your Adam's apple, following the curve of your jaw. Cut it too high and the beard looks like a chin strap. Leave it too low and it reads as neck hair, not beard.

The cheek line

For most faces, leave the cheek line natural and just clean the stray hairs above it. A hard, low cheek line makes the face look narrower and the beard look thin. Your barber will tell you if your growth suits a sharper line.

Growing it in

  • Weeks 1 to 4: leave it alone. Don't shape anything yet. Patchy spots often fill in by week four.
  • Week 4 to 6: book a first trim. Your barber sets the neckline and cheek line and evens out the length. This is the visit that decides how the beard looks for the next six months.
  • After that: a trim every three to four weeks keeps the shape. Match it to your haircut appointment and do both in one visit.
Patchy beard?Keep it shorter. A patchy beard at a quarter inch looks intentional. The same beard at an inch looks like it's trying. A barber can set a length that hides the thin spots.

Daily upkeep at home

  • Wash it two or three times a week, not daily. Daily washing dries the skin under it and causes the itch.
  • A few drops of beard oil on damp hair, worked to the skin. This is for the skin, not the hair.
  • Brush it down and forward with a boar bristle brush. It trains the hair and spreads the oil.
  • Leave the lines to your barber. One wrong pass with a home trimmer and you're starting over.

Beard questions.

How often should I get a beard trim?

Every three to four weeks keeps the shape. Many clients book it with their haircut and do both in one visit.

Where should my beard neckline be?

About two finger widths above the Adam's apple, following the curve of the jaw.

Does a beard trim include the lines?

Yes. A trim at Khalil Barbershop sets the cheek line and neckline with a straight razor, evens the length, and balances the beard with your haircut.

Can you fix a beard I trimmed myself?

Usually. If a line went too high, the fix is often a shorter overall length while it grows back. Come in and your barber will tell you honestly what can be done today.
