Kids haircuts: how to make it go well.

A barber's advice for parents in Ottawa. When to book, what to bring, what to say, and how a first haircut goes at Khalil Barbershop.

Sam with a young client after a haircut

A good kids haircut comes down to three things: a calm barber, a short appointment, and a parent who has set the kid up to expect it. The barber is our job. The other two are easy once you know what works.

Before you come

  • Book a morning or early afternoon slot. Kids do better fed and rested. Avoid nap time and the hour before dinner.
  • Talk about it the day before. "Tomorrow we're going to the barber. He'll use the buzzer, it tickles, and then you'll look sharp." No surprises.
  • Bring a photo of the cut you want. It saves the back and forth while your child's patience is running.
  • Bring something to hold. A small toy or a phone with a show on it. There's no shame in it. It works.
  • Come in a top that's easy to brush off. Clippings get everywhere.

During the cut

  • Sit where your child can see you. For very small kids, they can sit on your lap with the cape over both of you.
  • Let the barber do the talking with your child. Kids mirror the adult who's calm.
  • Don't say "don't be scared." Say "almost done" and "you're doing great."
  • If it's going sideways, we stop. A tidy cut that ends early beats a perfect cut with a crying kid. We can finish next time.

Who we cut

Kids book a regular haircut at Khalil Barbershop. Add the age in the booking notes so the barber knows who is coming. Teens book a student cut. Every barber in the shop cuts kids, and between them they've done thousands of first haircuts. If your child did well with a particular barber, book that barber by name next time. Familiar faces make the second visit easier than the first.

More from the chair

Parent questions.

What do I book for my child?

Any age. Book a haircut and note the age. Teens book a student cut and bring their student ID.

Can my child sit on my lap?

Yes. For small kids that's often the easiest way. The cape goes over both of you.

What if my child won't sit still?

We go at their pace, take breaks, and stop if we need to. A tidy cut that ends early is a win. We can finish next visit.

Do I need to book or can we walk in?

Booking is best for kids. It means no waiting in the shop, which is where patience runs out. [Confirm walk-in policy.]
